The New Jersey-based International Boxing Federation (IBF) has just greenlighted the April 6 superflyweight eliminator between Filipino AJ Banal and Uruguay's Caril "El Raton" Herrera at the Araneta Coliseum.
Michael Aldeguer, in a message yesterday, said that he has already received a written approval from IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker, and that they are just waiting for the written contracts to be turned in and everything will be a go.
Aldeguer noted that the looming battle between two undefeated prospects was made possible through the efforts of international matchmaker non-pareil Sampson Lewkowicz, and was approved by no less than Golden Boy Promotions vice-president Eric Gomez.
The winner of the Banal-Herrera tiff automatically gets the no. 1 spot in the IBF superfly division, although Australia's Vic Darchinyan is now the mandatory challenger to IBF champ Dmitri Kirilov.
Kirilov successfully defended his title yesterday with a majority draw against Cecilio Santos, and all indications point to a battle with Darchinyan next. Should Darchinyan come out victorious, the agreement was for him to face Gorres in a highly-anticipated rematch.
The Gorres and Darchinyan camps had earlier agreed that the Australian fighter gets his first crack at Kirilov, with the agreement that should he come out victorious, Gorres will be granted a rematch of their highly-publicized first bout.
If Kirilov retains the title, Lewkowicz had emphasized that he will try his best to get an agreement with the Russian's camp for him to face Gorres.
