Boracay Island, Philippines – Patty Mills scored 21 of his team high 27 points in the second half alone, hitting 5 of his 7 three-pointers in a furious rally that helped the Spurs overcome a 14-point deficit and Spencer Dinwiddie’s career-high 41 points, to beat the Brooklyn Nets 118-105 on Thursday night (Friday morning, Philippine time) at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Gregg Popovich couldn’t be any happier, as he got contribution from top to bottom, with each of his wards scoring at least one field goal. LaMarcus Aldridge had a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds, to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, and 4 blocks.
The Spurs, who have won 17-straight against the Nets in San Antonio, improved to 11 wins and 16 losses and are now tied with the Phoenix Suns at 10th place in the Western Conference team standings.
Dinwiddie was on attack mode, making 14 field goals, including 4 from deep. His aggressiveness also brought him 10 times to the charity stripe, missing only one attempt. Jarrett Allen added a double-double of 19 markers and 13 boards, to go with 6 dimes, 1 steal, and 1 block for the Nets.
Brooklyn’s loss was like rubbing salt to the wound. With a little over a minute into the fourth frame, David Nwaba sustained a torn right Achilles tendon after scrambling for the ball. It was all downhill since then for the Nets. Quoting John Hilarion C. Salas, one of basketball’s great minds, “Nwaba went down, and the Nets’ D went down with him…”
The Nets, who dropped to a 15-13 win-loss card, will travel home to host the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night (Sunday morning, Philippine time).
Meanwhile, the Spurs will once again face their former star Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers in San Antonio on the same night.
