1st Iloilo All-Women Amateur Boxing Slugfest Set on March 9

ILOILO CITY ? Some of the top amateur boxers in the city and province of Iloilo will be seeing action in the first Iloilo All-Women Amateur Boxing Tournament on March 9, this year at the Robinsons Palace.

This was announced recently by couple Arnold and Girlie Tinagan, owners of the only martial arts club here, Tinagan Martial Arts Club.

The couple said all colleges and the city?s 180 barangays will be invited to send entries in the junior and senior categories.

In the junior division, entries will be 17 years old and below while in the senior division, entries will be 24 years old and below. There will be a total of 12 bouts, they said.

The Tinagans said Bacolod-based Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippine (ABAP) regional president Wilfredo ?Babes? Ciokon, Jr. has confirmed his attendance and has accredited the one-day tournament which will serve as qualifying round for Iloilo team that will participate in the national tournament.

?We have produced some of the best female boxers and wushu players in the past and many of them are now with the Philippine team and will be seeing action in the Olympic Games,? said Arnold, a martial arts black belter.

Arnold said they will select the best female boxers from the tournament and will recommend them for the national team. He cited 2007 Thailand SEA Games bronze medalist Mary Jane Estimar, 56 kg, who will represent the country in the Beijing Summer Olympic Games and Dember Arceta, 52 kg, who is now in China training for the next Asean regional competitions.

Also invited during the tournament were Mayor Jerry P. Tre?as and Iloilo City Rep. Raul Gonzalez, Jr.
