Brooklyn, NY - Unbeaten Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo successfully defended his World Boxing Council title with a seventh round TKO victory of challenger Dennis Hogan at the Barclays Center Saturday night.
Charlo now 30-0 with 22 KOs, dominated the game Irish challenger from the opening bell. The reigning champ scored an emphatic one punch knockdown in the 4th round. A strong uppercut sent Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs) down and tumbling over the blue canvas. The Irishman who now fights out of Australia rebounded and managed to finish the round.
The 160 pound kingpin pressed the action right after his big 4th round. In the succeeding round, he jabbed, punched and tried to corner Hogan with hopes of stopping the fight right away but the challenger managed to put up a fight, retaliating against the champion.
Charlo snapped Hogan’s head in the 6th round with strong right gangs and looked for another finish in the round. Hogan responded by moving smartly out of the way of Charlo’a big punches.
The end came early in the 7th, a left hook from the champion sent Hogan down again in the fight. Hogan got up yet again but Referee Charlie Fitch looked at him and instantaneously stopped the fight 28 seconds into the round.
“I made it through 2019 and we’re going to 2020 with 20/20 vision. Shout out to Dennis Hogan for giving me real competition and for coming up to fight me,” said the victor.
Fans hope that 2020 will fit Charlo against the other big names and champions of the 160 pound landscape, where the likes of Saul Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin and Demetrius Andrade prey and rule.
“The middleweight division is wide open. I’m the WBC Champion. I’m going to enjoy this and spend time with my team. I’m here to fight whoever. You have to make the right decisions and do it at the right time. That’s what it’s all about.”
Eubank Jr. earns win over injured Korobov
In the co- main event, the interim World Boxing Association Middleweight title contest between Chris Eubank Jr. (28-2-0, 21 KOs) and Matt Korobov (28-2-1, 14 KOs), ended early due to an injury suffered by Korobov.
Korobov, a former title challenger to Charlo, complained of pain in his left shoulder in the early goings of the 2nd round which prevented him to continue to fight against Eubank Jr. who was making his US debut.
“I was trying to throw the left hand straight, and I just felt the muscle immediately, like I pulled it. It was a lot of pain right away. I couldn't fight with just one arm, especially being a southpaw." explained Korobov after.
The injury prevented any more action in the fight and Eubank Jr. earned an easy TKO victory and the interim WBA Middleweight title.
“I felt like I was about to get my swagger on. He just turned around and stopped I was going to go jump on him. I guess something happened with his shoulder.” said Eubank Jr.
Ryota Murata of Japan is the current WBA champion. He is slated to defend his title against challenger Steven Butler of Canada on December 23 in Japan.
