
Pinoy Boxers Lead Second Day Charge

Rogen Ladon faces Indonesia's Suguro Aldoms in today's bout.
After the Philippine women's team led by the five gold medals seeking Josie Gabuco anchored the charge in the country's campaign in the opening day of boxing events of the ongoing 30th Southeaat Asian Games at the PICC, it is now the turn of the men's squad.
Defending light heavyweight champion John Nobel Marvin leads two other Pinoys in the quest for the gold as he takes on Troung Hoang Dinh of Vietnam in the quarterfinals of the event's heaviest division.
The Fil British Marvin won the gold in the last Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur in 2017.
Opening today's drive is Rogen Ladon who has advanced by bye yesterday and will take on a very dangerous opponent in Indonesia's Suguro Aldoms, the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEAG light flyweight gold medalist in the quarter finals of the flyweight class.
Ladon was silver medalist in the 2015 Singapore Games as a light flyweight. He also won silver in the last Asian Games and represented in country in the Rio Olympics.
Also seeing action is Charly Suarez who has also advanced by bye and he will take on Myanmar's Min Lakar Paing in the quarterfinals of the lightweight class tonight.
Suarez was a two times gold medalist in the games, winning in 2009 and 2011 editions as lightweight. But he just settled for bronze in the last KL SEAG fighting as light welterweight. Now he is back to his natural weight class. He slso was in the Rio Olympics.
Meanwhile, light welterweight James Palicte has advanced to the next round by bye.
Yesterday, women's light flyweight Gabuco defeated her tough Thai opponent by 4-1 decision while bantamweight Aira Villegas and flyweight Irish Magno swept their opposites from Laos and Singapore by similar 5-0 verdict.
Light flyweight Carlo Paalam, the lone Pinoy who saw action in the opener bested his tough Laotian foe by unanimous decision to also advance to the next round.
Defending middleweight champion Felix Marcial and bantamweight Ian Clark Bautista have drawn bye yesterday and also advanced to the next round.
If these three Pinoy boxers with scheduled bouts today emerged victorious, the country will advance a total of ten bets to the next round with assurance of at least bronze medals.
Only welterweight Joel Bacho as well as women's featherweight Nesthy Petecio and lightweight Rita Pasuit have yet to see action.
Petecio the recent world women's championship gold medalist is seeking her first gold medal in the biennial meet after settling for silver in her previous two stints.
The Philippines is entered in all thirteen events in boxing with potential of winning as many medals, preferably the gold variety.
