Boracay Island, Philippines – Luka Doncic had 42 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists to lead the Dallas Mavericks past the slumping San Antonio Spurs 117-110 on Monday night (Tuesday morning, Philippine time) at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.
He now joins his childhood hero LeBron James as the only players in league history to record a 40-point triple-double before turning 21 years old. That was his sixth triple-double this season, leading the league, thus far, on that category.
Doncic, last season’s Rookie of the Year awardee, also buried 5 threes, including the one that gave Dallas a 115-110 cushion with 26.5 seconds left to play. With this victory, the Mavericks improved to 8 wins and 5 losses.
Dorian Finney-Smith provided solid support with 22 markers on a very efficient 8-for-10 field goal shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep, to go along with 5 boards, 3 dimes, 1 steal, and 1 block. Kristaps Porzingis also added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, including 4 treys for Dallas.
Coach Gregg Popovich’s wards absorbed their sixth consecutive loss and are now off to their worst start since the 1996-97 season, which was right before they drafted Spurs legend and current assistant coach Tim Duncan. DeMar DeRozan led San Antonio with season high 36 points, rallying the team from 14 points down at the start of the fourth quarter and closing the gap at 102-104 with 4:38 left on the clock.
The Spurs, who dropped to a 5-9 win-loss card, will be at Washington on Wednesday night (Thursday morning, Philippine time) to face the Wizards.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks will next host the Golden State Warriors on the same date.
