ILOILO CITY ? To iron out some kinks in as far as preparations for the 2008 National Open, Youth and Women Amateur Boxing Championships to be held here on April 6-12 is concerned, Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) secretary general Rogelio M. Fortaleza recently met with local organizers led by city councilor Jose Espinosa III, chair of the city sports council, in a hotel here.
?The meeting last Saturday (Feb. 2) morning was to finalize the different working committees that will facilitate the activities in the week-long tournament,? said Marlon Lumacad, representative of Erwin Chiongson?s Winners Gym and one of the private organizers of the national event.

Lumacad said the tournament shall be known as ?Smart National Open, Youth and women Amateur Boxing Championship? as the telecom firm has agreed to be the main sponsor. The city government will also reportedly chip in half of the amount needed to run the event.
?We will close a portion of De Leon St., (City Proper) across two buildings of the Robinsons Place during the duration of the tournament to be used as venue,? said Lumacad.
The objective of the national slugfest, sanctioned by ABAP, is ?to widen the identification and recruitment of potentially talented boxers who will be scientifically trained and molded into a highly competitive athlete who will represent and bring honors to the country in international competitions,? stated the tournament guidelines.
The concept, Fortaleza stressed, is ?a truly comprehensive boxing tournament designed to establish a solid structure of camaraderie and closer brotherhood amongst the different boxing organizations nationwide under the ABAP guidelines.
