GENERAL SANTOS CITY – Sen. Manny Pacquiao pledged to extend relief assistance to residents displaced by the three succeeding strong temblors which struck Mindanao late last month.

The first one with magnitude 6.3 happened on October 16, then followed by magnitude 6.6 which took place on October 29. The latest with magnitude 6.5 occurred barely two days thereafter.

The epicenter of these three successive quakes was in Tulunan, a second-class municipality in Cotabato province.

Tulunan Mayor Reuel Limbungan claimed that 4,368 residents in his locality were affected by the quakes.

“All 29 barangays were affected but we identified Barangays Daig, Magpok and Paraiso as the ones hardly-hit. All houses in these three barangays were totally flattened to the ground,” Limbungan bared.

Victims have been appealing for food supplies, water, medicine and temporary shelter.

“Local residents are hoping Sen. Manny Pacquiao could find time to visit them. His presence alone would lift the spirit and morale of the quake victims,” Limbungan said.

In an adjacent Makilala town, 13,400 residents are temporarily sheltered in 10 different evacuation centers.

Municipal administrator and information officer Sherly Orbita revealed that immediate needs of the victims include tents, food, water and medicine.

On Monday, Sen. Pacquiao directed his chief of staff Krista Mercado and chief political affairs officer Dominador Lagare III to plan out the distribution of relief assistance to the victims within this week.

“We will be distributing relief packs to the quake victims. Each relief pack contains six canned goods, five kilos rice, noodles cup, malong (tube skirt) and flashlight. We will also be giving out some tents and empty drums to be used as temporary septic tanks of the displaced residents,” Lagare bared.

According to Lagare, the budget for the relief operation will be coming from Sen. Pacquiao’s personal money not from the government funds.

Lagare added Sen. Pacquiao will personally visit the quake affected areas in Cotabato and Davao Del Sur provinces this coming Thursday.

“Senator Pacquiao wants to see personally the situation of the quake victims,” Lagare said.
