Alex Aroy.

After two unsuccessful South African quests, Maasin Bomber Alex Aroy will face Arnel Tadena of Candijay, Bohol in a rematch in Villaba, Leyte. Dubbed as ?Bahog-bahog in Villaba,? the two warriors will face each other in a grudge match to settle once and for all who the real winner is.

The first bout of the two protagonists ended in a technical draw last Maasin City Fiesta on August 14, 2007. Boxing fans were dissatisfied with the result of the Philippine Boxing Federation championship fight since they expected an easy knockout victory by the Maasin Bomber in the early rounds as the local hero handed unforgiving punches to the body and head of his opponent.

Aroy, who was known for stopping his opponents in the early stages of his fights, was clearly ahead on points when an accidental head butt gashed Tadena?s head, prompting referee Tony Peasons, upon Dr. Teodulo Salas? advice, to stop the fight in the second round. Hence, the PBF championship belt remained on Aroy by virtue of the draw.

Aroy has a 12-5-2 (6 KOs) win-loss-draw card, while Tadena?s professional record is 7-3-2 (4 KOs). Aroy is rated RP No. 7 light-flyweight contender, while Tadena is the RP No. 6 mini-flyweight contender. They will slug it out in the 110-lb division for ten rounds.

His hope of becoming a WBC international minimumweight champion in the same category as Manny Pacquiao went for naught in that forgettable evening when the lights went off in South Africa because of a doubtful power failure at a time when Aroy appeared to be dominating over the champion. It resulted in a controversial victory of WBC international minimumweight titlist Zukisani Kwayiba when the judges? scorecards were read as mandated by WBC rules.

Although the rematch with Kwayiba did not materialize because Aroy exerted a lot of effort in reducing to get the 105-lb. mini-flyweight limit. It also contributed to the sluggish first few rounds he had with Kwayiba.

Aroy again failed to win the World Boxing Council international crown without throwing a single punch. His South African opponent WBC international light-flyweight champion Phumzile Matyhila was stripped of his title when he failed to make the weight limit when he tipped the scales 3 kg. overweight. Organizers cancelled the bout and Matyhila was stripped of his belt.

In the supporting main event of the Villaba tussle, Gedion Amba of Cebu city will face Albert Cesa of Manila in 8 rounds in the 115- lb. division. In the two 4-rounders, Ryan Tampos of Bato, Leyte will fight Little Bantoy of Cebu City in the 105-lb. category, while Jaime Bermeso of Bato, Leyte will slug it our with Jico Suico of Cebu City in the same weight division.
