Taduran-Salva Barnburner Proves All-Pinoy World Title Bout A Big Hit

The recent barnburner of a fight between Pedro Taduran aka The General and the Little Rock and Samuel Salva for the vacant IBF minimumweight title, won by Taduran by 5th round retirement proved that all-Pinoy world title fight could be a big hit among local fans.

That fight which was the only world title bout this last weekend ended with Salva quitting on his stool before the start of the fifth round after being battered and nearly felled by Taduran's vicious two fisted assault from the second stanza. Salva had to be carried out of the ring on stretcher and rushed to the hospital where he was eventually cleared of any major internal injuries.

Taduran and Salva therefore proved that two Filipinos could do battle with all seriousness and mean intentions using their physical gifts, talents and skills atop the ring especially if a world boxing championship and the opportunity to add honor and glory to the country is at stake.

Of course providing entertainment to the boxing fans, both viewing the fight live at the Philippine Marine Corps Jurado Hall in Taguig City and on television via ABS-CBN Sports and Action Channel was another major motivation for both fighters

Taduran proved the hungrier fighter having been denied in a previous world title try in Thailand and after rising from a first round flash knockdown, proceeded to batter Salva with an incessant furious and ferocious two fisted attack that had Salva almost out of his feet, bruised and bloodied by the bell ending the fourth round.

Salva did the right thing in surrendering on his stool and the crowd finding no reason to complain, lustily cheered the winner while showing deep concern for the loser as he was carried out of the ring.

What is next for Taduran?

Any Filipino fighter and his handlers would want nothing less than bigger paydays after a world title success.

Possibilities include title unification against any of the two Thai reigning world champions especially long serving WBC ruler Wanheng Menayothin who beat him the last time and WBA titlist Knockout CP Freshmart. Freshmart however might still have an unfinished business with another Pinoy fighter ArAr Andales whose camp is protesting the contriversial ending of their last title bout.

Taduran could also target a unification against Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Mendez who just recently wrested the WBO crown from the head of Vic Saludar in San Juan.

But the minimumweight division is also teeming with world rated Filipino fighters that now includes Saludar, Mark Anthony Barriga, Melvin Jerusalem, Robert Paradero, Rey Loreto, Andales, Toto Landero and newly minted OPBF champion, the enigmatic Lito Dante.

It is entirely up to Taduran and his manager Art Monis of the Hardstone Boxing Promotion.

We can only wish they will decide wisely and well so that Pedro, the Little Rock Taduran will have a longer reign as world champion.
