American promoter Gary Shaw, who formerly represented Manny Pacquiao, has expressed deep admiration to sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer and his family for the way they handle their boxing activities as well as the fighters under the ALA Gym.
Shaw, who arrived in Cebu last Thursday to witness the Vic Darchinyan-Z Gorres battle on February 2, met a select group of mediamen Friday evening at an upscale restaurant in Cebu, and announced how impressed he was by what he saw at the ALA Gym.
"I visited the ALA this afternoon, and what I saw was just beyond boxing. It was special," Shaw said, noting the young boys who would come in with school uniforms straight from their classes.
Shaw, voted by Yahoo Sports as one of the world's 25 most powerful boxing figures, also noted that he wished his fighter Vic Darchinyan was "not fighting one of Tony Aldeguer's boxers," hinting of the manner by which he has been treated in Cebu since his arrival.
The future Hall of Fame promoter, however, remained solid on his position when asked about his prediction of the outcome of the Gorres-Darchinyan fight.
"Darchinyan will knock Gorres out. It will be an exciting fight. It will be what you will call a balls to the walls fight. Reminds me of Marquez-Vazquez. Darchinyan is a guy that wants to hunt down, like an eagle he will hunt down Z Gorres. The pressure will be on Gorres as he will be fighting in front of his own fans," analyzed Shaw.
Shaw, whose other ward includes the very talented Nonito Donaire, the world flyweight king, also divulged that the Filipino fighter's April 4 showdown with Hussein Hussein promises to be an exciting fight, and if Donaire came out victorious, he would then get the big fights he's been asking.
Shaw, a former New Jersey boxing regulator before joining the world's list of elite promoters, also said that he will slowly bring up Donaire through the different weight divisions, and if he would still be on top of the world after big fights in the 115 and 118 lbs, a fight with Mexican Rafael Marquez would not be an impossibility.
Shaw also promotes Marquez, who owns two classic battles with nemesis Israel Vasquez whom he will face in a rubbermatch on March 1.
