There will be no Winning, no Twins, and certainly no Tibay gloves when leathers fly for the February 2 IBF eliminator between local hero Z "The Dream" Gorres and the hard-hitting Australian Vic Darchinyan at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The famed Mexico-made Cleto Reyes gloves, acknowledged as the 'puncher's gloves' will be used when the two warriors collide for the right to be installed as mandatory challenger to IBF champion Dmitri Kirilov.
"We have already received the Cleto Reyes gloves we ordered. It's ready to be used," said a source.
Famed trainer Nonito Donaire Sr, who visited the ALA Gym yesterday to thank sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer and his boxers for helping his son Nonito Jr prepare for his battle against Luis Maldonado, said that using the Cleto Reyes gloves will open the door for a possible knockout during the fight.
Meanwhile, ALA chief trainer Edito Villamor yesterday said that Gorres is just some six pounds over the superflyweight limit, and should have no problems making the weight for the official weigh-in.
Gorres sparred ten rounds yesterday against lightweight Glen Masicampo, Mark Gil Melligen and Rey Villar.
The heavy-handed Darchinyan, for his part, has foregone celebrations for his 32nd birthday and is sparring heavy-hitting Russian super-middleweight Victor Oganov.
