ILOILO CITY ? In order to put a halt on controversy generated by the tournament organizers? failure to have a stand-by ring physician in its two previous tournaments in December 2007, Mario ?Marlon? Lumacad, Jr., chief organizer of ?Box Iloilo Box?, an amateur boxing program co-sponsored by the city government and Winner?s Gym, said he will ask city health chief Dr. Urminico Baronda to act as ring doctor when the tournament resumes in Robinsons Place here on January 12.
?I have requested Dr. Baronda to act as ring physician and he already said yes since this program is also sponsored by the city government,? said Lumacad, who represents the Winner?s Gym.
The controversy ensued after Roland Magahin, regional vice president of Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP), protested that the organizers did not have any ring doctor when they held the tournament last December 15 and 29.
Magahin conferred the matter to Bacolod-based ABAP-6 president Wilfredo ?Babes? Ciokon who confirmed that under ABAP Rule XXIV, the attendance of a qualified ring doctor is required in any tournament sanctioned by ABAP.
Lumacad, son of the famed professional boxing trainer Mario, Sr., insisted that the ring doctor assigned in the December 15 and 29 tournaments ?was just on stand-by? although the doctor he was not around.
The ring doctor, Lumacad said, designated two competent paramedics Vicentn John Abellta and Romel Pe?a, both of Saviour International Hospital, last December 15 and 29.
?And besides, this is not a big boxing tournament like the one that we see on TV; this is just a program held inside the mall,? explained Lumacad.
Magahin accused Lumacad of having violated the ABAP rules and vowed to bring the matter to the ABAP national level if he would continue to hold a tournament without any ring physician.
Lumacad appealed to Magahin ?not to disrupt our program because it has already taken off.? He added that he has gotten the approval of the ABAP for the city to host the 2007 National Youth Amateur Boxing championship in May.
