CEBU CITY- Oozing with confidence that he will emerge victorious in his fight this week-end, Dave Pe?alosa (13-0, 9 KOs), is focusing on having a regional boxing championship after his next fight date.
The son of former two-time world boxing champion himself, Dodie Boy Pe?alosa, will be the featured in the main event this Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Skydome of SM North Edsa in Quezon City for the Philippines vs Tanzania boxing card.
Dodie?s younger brother, Gerry Pe?alosa, also a two-time boxing world champions himself during his prime, is promoting the fight along with ESPN5 which will air the fight live on TV.
Dave will fight against Tanzanian former featherweight champion Twalib Tuwa (21-5-2, 14 KOs) in a 10-round bout.
?I am making sure that fight fans will be entertained. I will do my best to win and perhaps go for the regional belt next,? the 27- year old Pe?alosa told this writer in Cebuano in a phone interview.
One of the targets, depending on the outcome of the fight, will be a World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia feathwerweight title or any other available regional tilt aside from the Seoul based boxing organization.
CHINA TRAINING
To prepare for the fight, Dave went to Qingdao, China alongside his cousin Carlo Cesar Pe?alosa (12-1, 5 KOs) who will box with another Tanzanian pugilist Jemsi Kibazange (11-2-2, 1 KO), for the vacant WBA Asia South flyweight championship.
The Pe?alosas were accompanied by their coach/trainer Jonathan Pe?alosa, honing their training in sparring with topnotch Chinese boxers in the area located in eastern Shandong province.
Team Pe?alosa recently arrived to taper off for the fight, capping at least six-weeks of training that began in Manila before flying to China.
Prior to their fights this week, the Pe?alosas were both successful in their earlier encounters with separate Indonesian fighters in Tagbilaran City last June.
Dave won again Ricky Manufue via 2nd round stoppage while Carlo demolished Iwan Keys in the 5th after the Indonesian threw in the towel.
TAPALES COMEBACK
One of the bouts will also serve as the comeback fight of former World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantanweight champion Marlon Tapales (30-2, 13 KOs) who is moving up in weight at junior featherweight
Tapales won his last fight against Shohei Omori via an 11th round TKO in Osaka, Japan last April 2017 but he earlier lost it on the scales for failing to make the 118 lbs. weight limit.
The Lanao del Norte native former world champion will box with Goodluck Mrema (22-3, 12 KOs), another Tanzanian, who once fought, albeit beaten, by Cebuano Jeo Santisima last July 2017.
After the loss to Santisima however, Mrema won five of his next seven fights, the recent was a defeat against Lee McGregor for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) youth bantamweight championship in the SSE Hydro arena in Glasgow, Scotland last June 23, 2018.
On the part of Tapales, his loss also meant losing U.S. $15, 000 from his purse of U.S. $150,000.
If he will win against Mrema, Gerry, who runs Gerry Pens Promotions, Inc. is aiming to arrange an interim international championship once the former champion will be back in the world rankings.
The long hiatus resulted to the non-inclusion of Tapales in the rankings, it was learned.
GENSAN KID
Another exciting match is non-title bout between reigning interim WBA bantamweight world champion Reymart Gaballo, 22, (19-0, 16 KOs) of Sanman boxing gym in Gensan vs Julias Kirazawe (29-6-1, 15 KOs).
Gaballo who is from Polomolok, South Cotabato won his title over American Stephon Young at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida last March.
He is being managed by brothers, Jim Claude and John Ray Mananguil, both prominent businessmen in General Santos City.
The official weigh-ins for the bouts will be on Saturday, 8:00am at the TV5 media center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.
At least four other bouts will spice the event which will start at 1:00pm Philippine time.
