MAASIN CITY, SOUTHERN LEYTE ? The boxing card was threatened by rains and power interruptions caused by the coming typhoon ?Mina.? But this did not hamper the spirits of the local boxing fans in trooping to the Maasin City Gym to witness the ?Maasin Mayor?s Cup ? Cebu vs. Maasin? boxing promotion scheduled November 22 for the birthday of Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado.
In the main event, comebacking local favorite Darius Dag-uman proved he has not lost his sting after several months of inactivity by pulverizing Octavio Aleonar of Carcar City, Cebu. Dag-uman showed he was well-prepared for the fight as he anchored Maasin City boxing team in prevailing over their visiting Cebu foes. Dag-uman got the nod of all three judges with identical scores of 60-54 in the 6 rounder.
Born in Barangay Maria Clara, Maasin City, he went to train under trainer Anol Jaca together with ?Batang Maasin? Alex Aroy. The local favorite Aroy was not with the card, as he is scheduled to leave for Johannesburg, South Africa for the joust with WBC international light-flyweight champion Phumzile Matyhila on November 30.
