
Wesley So settles for 3rd; Samuel Shankland crowned king of US Championships

Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So finished third place in the 2018 US Chess Championships on Monday, two and a half points behind the champion, GM Samuel Shankland. The tournament was held at the Saint Louis Chess & Scholastic Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
Playing white, the Bacoor, Cavite native So split the point with GM Hikaru Nakamura after 30 moves of Nimzo-Indian defense in the eleveth and final round.
He collected 6.5 points on two wins and nine draws in the single round-robin tournament. The last year champion So earned a cash prize of $25,000 for his effort.
Shankland, on the other hand beat GM Awonder Liang after 43 moves of Caro-Kann defense.
Finishing his campaign with undefeated record 8.5 points on six wins, five draws to went home the top prize of $50,000.
GM Fabiano Caruana, meantime defeated GM Alexander Onischuk after 29 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening.
Caruana placed second overall with 8.0 points on six wins , four draws and a loss. He pocketed runner-up prize of $35,000.
