
GM Villamayor wins opener in 45th Selangor Open chess

FILIPINO Grandmaster (GM) Buenaventura "Bong" Villamayor beat Malaysian Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Jia-Tien Chua at the start of the 45th Selangor Open Chess Tournament 2018 held at the Grand Ballroom, 5th floor, Cititel Mid Valley Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday.
The Singapore based Pinoy chess teacher Villamayor with an 2427 Elo rating, expertly handed the white pieces to outclass his lower ranked Malaysian rival who has an Elo rating of 1750.
With the win, the Mauban, Quezon province Villamayor who is seeded second in the oldest chess tournament in Malaysia, shares 1st to 36th places along with compatriots IM Haridas Pascua of Mangatarem, Pangasinan, IM Oliver Dimakiling of Davao City, IM Hamed Nouri of Escalante City, Negros Occidental, IM Emmanuel Senador of Iloilo, FM Alekhine Nouri of Far Eastern University, Quezon City, FM Nelson Villanueva of La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, NM Efren Bagamasbad of Quezon City, NM Merben Roque of Cebu and Ian Cris Udani of Bacolod City.
The No. 1 seed Pascua bested countryman and Hongkong-based No.45 seed Edgardo Borigas (Elo 1767), the No.4 seed Dimakiling trounced No. 48 seed Lim Kian Hwa (Elo 1718) of Malaysia, the No.7 seed Hamed outclassed No.52 seed Aminuddin Muhd Faqih (Elo 1667) of Malaysia, the No.8 seed Senador defeated No.53 seed Abdul Razak Tariq Ziad (Elo 1664) of Malaysia, the No.9 seed Roque crushed No. 54 seed Ragu Ram R.Nadarajan (Elo 1663) of Malaysia, the 10 seed Miciano subdued No.55 seed Chembeti Shreesh Amit (Elo 1656 ) of Malaysia, the No.11 seed Udani defeated No.56 Low Chee Pang (Elo 1656) of Malaysiia, the No.19 seed Bagamasbad (Elo 2120) dealt No.64 Yeop Mat Zaki (Elo 1556) of Malaysia, the No.21 seed Villanueva (Elo 2081) whipped No.66 seed Chin Shun Yi (Elo 1534) of Malaysia and No.36 seed Alekhine
