SENATE ? Senator Manny Pacquiao fulfilled today his promise to help the family of Joanna Demafelis redeem the land mortgaged when she was still applying for work abroad.

The remains of Joanna was found inside a freezer in an abandoned apartment in Al Shaab district of Kuwait last February 9, about a year after she was declared missing.

The suspects, Demafelis? Lebanese employer Shariff Faswat Abdoh Ghabriel and his Syrian wife, were already captured.

The Kuwaiti government is negotiating for the repatriation of Ghabriel couple back to Kuwait so they can be held responsible for the crime they committed.

Four years ago, Joanna left her hometown in Iloilo in search for the proverbial greener pasture abroad.

On Wednesday afternoon, Joanna?s parents Crisanto and Eva Demafelis dropped by Sen. Pacquiao?s office to get the check worth P380,000, the amount needed to redeem the three-hectare rice land mortgaged by the family.

The Demafelis family was accompanied by Hans Leo J. Cacdac, administrator of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

The Demafelis couple was so grateful that they can now get back the land they have mortgaged to a moneyed resident in their place.

?No words can aptly describe how thankful and happy we are for the financial help extended by Sen. Pacquiao,? the Demafelis couple said in vernacular.

The boxer-lawmaker earlier filed a resolution asking the Senate to investigate the recent deaths of overseas Filipino workers particularly those deployed in the Middle East countries.

OFWs have been hailed as the modern-day heroes for contributing significantly to the national economy.
