MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Timberwolves are 5-of-5 in their last home stand and the Portland Trail Blazers were their latest victim, going down, 120-103, at the Target Center.
Among the other teams the Wolves beat during this streak include the New Orleans Pelicans, (116-98), the Cleveland Cavaliers (127-99), the Oklahoma City Thunder (104-88) and the New York Knicks 118-108.
Timberwolves bench tactician Tom Thibodeau has put more premium on defense, assigning defensive specialist Jimmy Butler to the opponents' best scorer with helps from Taj Gibson and Jeff Teague. Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins have also shown improvement on defense.
The Wolves overcame a slow start in which they trailed 33-31 after one quarter, but they rallied and took the driver's seat at halftime, 57-43.
Butler topscored for the Timberwolves with 24 points, Teague had 22 while Towns added 20 with 11 rebounds. Wiggins finished with 17 and Gibson tallied 12.
For the losing Blazers, only three players produced double digits led by team captain Damian Lillard with 21 points. Shooting guard CJ McCollum had 18 and Pat Connaughton added 18 off the bench.
The Wolves will travel to the City of Orlando, Florida to face the Magic on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning RP Time) while the Blazers on the same night will host the Phoenix Suns.
FASTBREAK. Sunday night was a very good night for Minnesotans because prior to the Wolves' victory, the Minnesota Vikings won against the visiting New Orleans Saints, 29-24.
Because of the Vikings victory they will travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles for the Northern Football Conference (NFC) Championship on Sunday night (January 21th).
In the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship, the reigning Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on the same night.
The winner between Vikings vs Eagles and Patriots vs Jaguars will face for NFL Super Bowl 52 (Championship) on Sunday February 4th at the US Bank Stadium in City of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
