GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? Senator Manny Pacquiao hailed the fisherfolk for their invaluable contribution to both the local and national economy.

Sen. Pacquiao expressed tribute to the fisherfolk during the distribution and simple turn-over ceremony of 55 motorized banca to the beneficiaries held at the fish port complex here last Friday.

?We are gathered here today to fulfill our commitment to improve the lot of our people especially those who are in need,? Sen. Pacquiao said.

The initial release was just part of the 1,000 motorized boats to be distributed to Sarangani and General Santos fisherfolk under the auspices of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The senator from Mindanao expressed gratitude to DA Secretary Manny Pinol, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Philippine Fisheries Development Authority including local government units and private sector for the success of the project.

?Through the help and cooperation of these agencies, we were able to extend succor to our fisherfolk. This is just a beginning. We will continue doing these to uplift the living condition of our fishermen in different parts of the country,? Sen. Pacquiao bared.

The boxer-lawmaker added ?Today, we recognize the hard work of our fisherfolk all-year round. And also today, we thank them by rewarding them.?

According to him, giving out free motorized fishing boats to the fisherfolk is just one of the many ways to recognize their toils and sacrifices in helping provide food for the country.

He revealed the release of 200 more motorized fishing boats to beneficiaries in Sargen area is now being processed.

Fisherfolk from Sarangani and Gensan thanked Sen. Pacquiao for making good his promise to continue helping them.

?As the saying goes, charity begins at home and this is exactly what we are doing. But we will do this nationwide not just here to help our constituency in other parts of the country,? Sen. Pacquiao concluded.

The fishing industry contributes an estimated 1.8 percent (valued at 196 billion pesos) to the country?s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
