
27th World Senior Chess Championship 2017: GMs Eugene Torre, Rogelio Antonio score back-to-back wins in Acqui Terme, Italy

Filipino Grandmasters (GMs) Eugene Torre and Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr.scored back-to-back wins in their respective division in the on-going 27th World Senior Chess Championship 2017 (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women) in Acqui Terme, Italy.
Torre's latest victory yesterday was against Italian Fide Master (FM) Giuseppe Valenti (Elo 2161). The third seed Torre who hold an Elo rating of 2465 defeated untitled Helmer Wieringa (1997) of the Netherlands in the opening round.
The wins have created a twenty one (21)-way tie for first place in the 65-years-old above category that includes No.2 GM Evgeny Sveshnikov (2480/Russia), No.5 GM Yuri S Balashov (2437/Russia) No.6 GM Vladimir Okhotnik (2434/France), no.7 GM Vlastimil Jansa (2425/Czech Republic), No.11 GM Davorin Komljenovic (2379/Croatia), No.13 IM Nils-Gustaf Renman (2368/Sweden), No.22 IM Arkady Shevelev (2280/Israel),No.23 IM Leon Piasetski (2269/Canada), No.27 FM Boris Gutkin (2250/Israel), No.28 Boris Malisov (2240/Israel), No.30 FM Christoph Frick (2230/Germany), No.31 Alan D Goldsmith (2227/Australia), No.33 Marat Primbetov (2222/Kazahkstan),No.37 FM Thor Geir Harestad (2205), No.38 Jens Hartung-Nielsen (2204/Denmark), No.39 FM Georg Haubt (2195/Germany), No.41 IM Francisco R.T. Trois (2184/Canada), No. 42 Igor Privara (Slovakia), No.47 Robert Beltz (2158/Germany) and No.80 Soren Svensson (2009/Sweden).
Top seed French GM Anatoly Vaisser (2503) halved the point with No. 43 Russian FM Boris Furman to led the huge group of 1.5 pointers in the 65+ Open category.
In the 50+ Open category, the sixth seed Antonio (2431) subdued No.32 Karl-Heinz Kannenberg (Germany/2216) for his second win in as many round. He earlier beat No.54 Andres Belmont Hernandez (2076/Mexico).
Antonio shared No.1 GM Julio Granda Zuniga (Peru) in the leadership board along with GM Giorgi Bagaturov (Georgia),GM Zurab Sturua (Georgia), GM Eric Priei (France) , IM Alexander Reprintsev (Ukraine), IM Renzo Mantovani (Italy), IM Devaki V Prasad (India), IM Evgenij Kalegin (Russia), IM Aitkazy Baimurzin (Kazakhstan), FM Kasem Vebic (Serbia), FM Krishan Jhunjhnuwala (USA), Peter Larsen (Denmark) and Jonathan Grant (Scotland).
It shall be recalled that Torre, Asia?s first GM, topped the 8th Asian Seniors Chess Championship last month in Auckland, New Zealand. He sweep of the 15-man tournament confined to players 65 and over.
