PENALOSA VS DE LEON REMATCH SET FOR FEBRUARY

LAS VEGAS -- It will be a battle of two world champions when reigning WBO bantam king Gerry Penalosa trades leathers once again with WBO superbantam boss Daniel Ponce De Leon in a highly-anticipated rematch in February.

This was confirmed yesterday by no less than Golden Boy Promotions vice-president and international matchmaker Eric Gomez, who said in an interview that Penalosa vs De Leon should be every Filipino's dream fight.

"We are now working on this one. It should take place in February in the Philippines, and we are currently working with our partner SGG Promotions and ALA to do it there," said the youthful GBP top executive.

Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who heads the SGG Sports Promotions, also confirmed yesterday the plan to do a rematch between the two world champions, indicating that television giant ABS-CBN will air the fight.

"It should take place sometime middle of February," said the well-liked Filipino promoter, who is accompanied here by WBO Asia Pacific Chairman Leon Panoncillo to watch the Manny Pacquiao-Marco Antonio Barrera fight as special guest of promoter Oscar De la Hoya and GBP CEO Richard Schaefer.

Penalosa is coming off a seventh-round demolition of Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez at the World Cup on August 11 to win the WBO title.

De Leon, who owns a controversial win over Penalosa in their initial encounter, had bludgeoned Filipino Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista in a no-sweat, one-round technical knockout at the World Cup, and is looking for a definitive win over the veteran Filipino in a rematch.
