YOUNG GUNS TO SHINE IN NEW FIGHT SERIES
TGW & Smithy brings Super Sunday 1
IT'S AN EXCITING TIME FOR BOXING IN THE GARDEN CITY with a new wave of stars emerging. This was no more evident than TGW & Smithy Bring the Big Fights 17 when boom new comers Gavan Hornery and Chris Brackin joined the likes of Herman Ene-Purcell, Steven Spark and Brent Rice as the leaders of the young guns.
Combine that with an ever growing base of amateurs and increasing popularity of corporate fights - boxing is on the rise.
To cater for the growth promoter Brendon Smith is launching TGW & Smithy Brings Super Sunday 1. A new unique series centred around the rising professional stars, up and coming amateurs and corporate fighters.
TGW & Smithy brings Super Sunday 1 will take place on a Sunday day time show September 17 at Smithy's TGW Gym.
The format will compromise of professional bouts, amateur bouts and a new Viking and Barbarian Cup corporate series.
"This series is about providing opportunities for the up and comers," Brendon Smith said.
"It's about providing opportunities for our every growing number of amateur fighters who work so hard in the gym and travel a lot of kilometres on the weekends to get fights.
"It's about giving our gym members and corporate business partners who put in so much and have always wanted to have a corporate fight.
"With the pro's we're hopeful the likes of Chris Brackin and Gavan Hornery who both scored impressive wins on debut will headline the pro side of the card. "
The first Barbarian Viking Cup will also take place on the card. It's a 5 person teams event for corporate fighters, the two teams being Team Barbarian and Team Viking. Team Barbarian headed by Corban The Barbarian Kanoveilomani and Team Viking headed by Steven 'The Viking' Spark.
Five corporate fighters will be a part of each team, they will receive six weeks of training by their respective coaches and will fight on the TGW & Smithy Brings Super Sunday 1. The team that wins the most fights will be awarded the inaugural Barbarian Viking Cup.
"This is a great concept and a just reward and opportunity for all our leading businesses to nominate a fighter to represent your business," Brendon Smith said.
"We have the two best young coaches in the country for them to work with in Steven Spark and Corban Kanoveilomani.
"They will all be pre-matched and enter a six week training camp in the gym with it all culminating with a corporate fight at the conclusion as a part of the Viking Barbarian Cup.
"We will match fighters according to weights and experience.
"for a total cost of $600 they will receive the whole boxing experience of a complete six week training program under a professionally qualified trainer the chance to fight on a big card in front of a big crowd and they will also receive a video of their fight.
"We are calling for nominations now so if you're interested inquire at the gym."
The card will also feature an amateur component.
"All fights will be pre-matched and feature our up and coming talent.
"It's through the amateurs we grow the stars of the future.
"Brent Rice fought on our cards as an amateur - he's now am undefeated Australian champion in the pros.
"Steven Spark fought as an amateur on cards like this and is now a Queensland champion in the pro's.
"Gavan Hornery and Chris Brackin are another two names who made the transition.
"Our next wave is coming through so this is their chance to follow in the foot steps and leave their own mark."
