The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has granted junior flyweight champion Ulises Solis a 90-day extension to defend his title in a mandatory bout against Filipino Bert Batawang due to an injury suffered by the champion while training.

IBF Championship Chairman Lindsey Tucker, in a letter to Top Rank's Todd Duboef, promoter of Solis, stated that Solis has until January 25, 2008 to defend against Batawang.

Solis' injury has been vouched by Dr. Fernando Shoji, who stated Solis suffers from bursitis and tendonitis for which he will have to undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation for 20 days. Shoji also stated that it is necessary for the reigning champion to have an MRI and have a follow up visit in 3 weeks for a re-evaluation.

Batawang's manager Sammy Gello-ani, in an interview, stated that the Filipino challenger plans to fly back to the country within this week along with trainer Jeremiah Quijano.

"I'm not in any way discouraged by this latest development. Boxing is like that. Postponements happen all the time. I'm sure my manager will take care of that," said Batawang in a long-distance interview.
