It was an entertaining Sunday for those who came to the Alabang Metropolis Mall to watch the 4-round exhibition bout between reigning WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa and WBC youth and NABF bantamweight champion Bernabe Concepcion.

Though the fight lacked some real fireworks, the presence of these two champions was enough to spark interest among the hundreds in attendance who cheered loudly every time each boxer was able to connect his punches. Vastly behind in experience, Concepcion more than held his own as he was able to land some hard punches to the body of Penalosa, who has the legendary trainer Freddie Roach in his corner. For his part, Penalosa occasionally scored some combinations to the head of Concepcion. The fight appeared to have been evenly fought although no verdict was announced as it was only an exhibition bout.

Prior to the exhibition fight, four official professional bouts were fought.

The featherweight clash between Johnny Lear and come-backing Ben Bermudez proceeded in a lackluster manner, at least for the first two rounds. However, things became interesting when a big Bermudez left to the jaw in the third sent Lear crashing to the canvas. Lear, who fought in the same venue in almost exactly the same time last year in his losing bid to Michael Domingo for the RP bantamweight crown, recovered well to take the fourth and had Bermudez staggering. Lear was once again controlling the fifth until another big left from Bermudez almost sent the former to a second trip to the canvas. The sixth and final round proved uneventful and the fight had to go to the judges? scorecards which yielded a split draw result (59-55 Bermudez, 58-57 Lear, and 57-57).

In another fight, Daniel Diolan was dominating Mario ?Jun? de Asis in their 4-round super-flyweight bout but could not finish him off and had to settle for a unanimous decision victory (40-36 in all three judges? scorecards).

Talented Arvin Diale was controlling most of the action in his 4-round flyweight fight against former RP junior flyweight challenger and currently ranked #9 contender Rodel Quilaton often catching the latter with crisp uppercuts to the head and hard straights to the chest and midsection. An accidental head-butt in the third opened a cut above Quilaton?s eye leading to a stoppage of the fight based upon the advice of the ringside physician. The rules say that in a four or a six rounder fight, if a boxer is unable to continue as a result of an injury coming from an accidental head-butt, the bout shall go to the scorecards if the stoppage occurred in the second half of the fight, that is, once the bell for the round starting the second half had sounded. When the scorecards were tallied, Diale emerged the winner via a technical unanimous decision by the scores of 29-28, 30-28, and 30-27.

In the curtain raiser, Ruther del Castillo scored a second round knockdown over Jonathan Pedrosa en route to a unanimous decision victory (38-37, 40-36, and 40-36).
