Although there's no official word yet on when will Manny Pacquiao submit himself to the mandatory 30-day safety weight check-in as stipulated in the World Boxing Council rules in title fights, the Filipino ring star appears to be in top shape and finds no problem as far as his weight is concerned.
WBC Rule 4.6, instituted in 1997 and was ratified during the 2nd WBC World Boxing Medical Congress last April 30 in Quintana Roo, Mexico, calls for compulsory "safety weigh-ins" 30 days and seven days prior to the fight. It is intended to address the safety concerns involved in a boxer losing too much weight in too short period of time.
Today marks the 30th day before Pacquiao defends his WBC International super featherweight title against Mexican great Marco Antonio Barrera in a keenly-awaited rematch on October 6 at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
But until now, there is no official communication from the WBC on when Pacquiao and Barrera are going to have their mandatory weigh-in at their respective training camps.
"Yeah, there is such thing (mandatory 30-day weigh-in), but until now nobody has contacted me yet about that," Pacquiao's celebrated American trainer Freddie Roach told The Freeman from his suite at Waterfront-Cebu City Hotel.
Whether or nor there will be a weigh-in, Pacquiao doesn't have a problem at all, according to Pacman's confidant and well-known Cebuano promoter Rex "Wakee" Salud in a separate interview.
Salud said Pacquiao's weight at the moment is 136 pounds, way below the maximum 143 pounds or 64.864 kilos set by the WBC for a fighter to weigh 30 days before a fight under the super featherweight division.
"Manny is in good shape and is not experiencing any weight problem. I spoke to him today (yesterday) and he told me he weighs 136 pounds at the moment. That's a lot better," said Salud. "Manny is training very hard because he knows the importance of this fight. I don't think he will encounter weight problems leading to his rematch with Barrera."
Meanwhile, as Pacquiao intensifies his training for the Barrera rematch, Salud is making sure that all of his needs are well taken cared off because he wanted Pacquiao to train with utmost comfort and privacy at his world-class sweatshop.
Recently, Salud further augmented his already state-of-the-art gym with a JBL sound system and a Samsung big screen LCD television he purchased from ECHO Appliance Center-Banilad branch managed by Ian Albert Chua.
"Manny wants to hear lively music while he trains that's why I put up a first-class sound system in my gym as well as a big TV screen so he can watch televison anytime during his lull moments,"said Salud. "But that's only when he's doing light workout and not during sparring."
