LOS ANGELES ? Senator Manny Pacquiao said the increase in tourism activities during the first eight months ? from January to August this year ? was an indication of tourists? confidence on the Duterte administration.
?President Duterte is perceived as a strong leader because of his adherence to the rule-of-law and no-nonsense campaign against criminalities and illegal drug trade,? Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao noted that no president of this country has ever achieved what Pres. Duterte had accomplished in barely four months.
?You see, the President is just four months in office, yet, he had already done many things for our country,? Pacquiao claimed.
Pacquiao said among the accomplishments of the Duterte administration include the bringing in of billions in investments and economic benefits out of his recent state visits in Brunei, China and Japan; curbing the reprehensible ?tanim-bala? scam at the NAIA airport; busting of several shabu laboratories; curbing illegal drug trade inside the NBP compound; and reduction of crime rate, among others.
?But, to me, his greatest accomplishment was the restoration and revival of people?s respect to the rule-of-law. His ultimate goal in launching the war on drugs, criminalities and corruption was to remind every Filipino that there?s such a thing as the rule-of-law. Without this, the country will remain in chaos,? Pacquiao said.
According to Pacquiao, he can read between the lines all the President wants is to instill in every Filipino the utmost value of discipline, hard work, self-respect and love for country.
Pres. Duterte had shocked particularly the western world for refusing to kowtow to the whims and caprices of the United States.
He?s the first ever Asian leader to spew diatribes and expletives against the US, including United Nations and European Union.
?Knowing Pres. Duterte, he?s independent-minded. He has nothing in mind but the interest and welfare of the country and the Filipino people. So, I hope, we?ll give him a chance to chart the destiny of our country,? Pacquiao said.
On its website, the Department of Tourism (DoT) revealed that this year tourist arrivals in the first eight months breached the four million mark, posting a total earnings of about P164.25 billion.
This is 7.92 percent higher than the P152.19 billion income posted by tourism sector in the same period in 2015.
The same source showed that inbound visitors from January to August had already summed up to 4,042,049 arrivals or 12.59 percent higher than the 3,590,038 arrivals in the same period last year.
Accordingly, this is the first time in history that tourist arrivals had surpassed the four million mark in just eight months.
Koreans remain the country?s top visitors this year with an accumulated 976,499 arrivals.
Americans landed on the second spot with a total of 584,149 arrivals.
?Foreign visitors feel safer now than before. I?m confident this trend will continue under the leadership of Pres. Duterte,? Pacquiao said.
