NIETES NEARS DREAM AFTER CALDERON VICTORY

CEBU CITY--WBO no. 1 minifly contender Donnie Nietes has boosted his possible crack at the world minifly crown after former title-holder Ivan Calderon yesterday defeated WBO junior flyweight champion Hugo Cazares in Puerto Rico.

Calderon had earlier relinquished his 105-lb title to challenge Cazares for the latter's title, yesterday defeating the Mexican on a split decision victory.

Calderon's victory, in effect, has given Nietes an automatic ticket to vie for the world title.

"The result fits our projected timetable for Nietes. We will announce it soon," informed Nietes' promoter Sammy Gello-ani when told yesterday of Calderon's victory.

Nietes, who holds the WBO Asia-Pacific minifly title, is scheduled to fight a Mexican opponent on September 30 in Cebu in an eliminator bout, although Calderon's victory might just open the door for an outright crack at the world title.

"I will contact the WBO," informed WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo when asked if Nietes will now get an automatic crack at the vacant title.
