Butch Ramirez.
IT came as a mighty breath of fresh air in Philippine sports. The decision by William Ramirez, new head of the Philippine Sports Comission, to take a firm and direct hand in the training and preparation of national athletes for major international competitions has put Peping Cojuangco, fumbling and over-staying head of the Philippine Olympic Commitee, on the ropes.
The POC, under Cojuangco had had full and final say in the composition of past national contingents to major competitions, like the Olympics and the Asian Games.
Not anymore. Explained Ramirez: ?The PSC has supervisory, disciplinary and visitorial powers over national sports associations. There will be changes in my administration, ; not mere changes in policies, but in enforcement.?
**
It was a stunning blow to the traditionally imperious POC, which has yet to counter and make a stand.
Meanwhile, the PSC chief proceeded to take steps towards a truly coordinated national training program. He has also asked athletes, coaches and training directors to sign a contract agreeing to follow rules and regulations regarding training and the monitoring of their activities.
?We are not under the POC,? said Ramirez. He added that one reason behind this new vigorous program is his goal to make sure people?s taxes spent on athletes and officials are spent properly.?
Mabuhay!

One trusted sports development guru who was most thankful to Chairman Ramirez was Dr. Aparicio Mequi, a former head of the PSC.
He said: ?Yes, Chairman Butch?the direction is CHANGE with reforms in the NSA?s and the POC. Ritchie Garcia was perceived to be an alter ego of Peping. Let this not happen to you. I am an avid supporter of President Duterte because his ethics is anchored on WALAY KAHADLOK. No Fear. I know that you have the same mantra. No fear versus POC and political interference. God bless your efforts.?
Hold it. Before we could send this column, there came this follow-up message from Dr. Mequi: ?Good day Chairman. I was misty-eyed and joyful upon reading your Solomonic decision ordering a dual meet to determine the best swimmers to represent the country in the Universiad, invoking the right of children and good for the country, and thus breaking the evil spell that mantled the POC for so long. For as long as you invoke the children and the country, the IOC can?t stop you. ?
Dr. Mequi claimed the POC couldn?t invoke government interference.
