Laguna boxer Jack Asis will attempt to make it two in a row for the Philippines when he challenges Poonsawat Kratidaenggym for the Pan-Asian Boxing Association (PABA) super-bantamweight title this Wednesday, August 22 at the Laksi Plaza, Bangkok, Thailand.
As earlier reported in this site, Richard Olisa, now fighting under the Jaro Stable, scored a huge upset when he frustrated the world championship aspiration of Devid Lookmahanak with a 2nd round demolition of the latter, thereby, gaining the Asian Boxing Council super-flyweight title previously held by the Thai.
Asis (16-7-2) will be up against a very talented boxer in Poonsawat who has an impressive record of 29-1 (20 KOs) including wins against Michael Domingo, Reman Salim, Alex Escaner, and Jake Verano. His only loss came at the hands of current WBA bantamweight titleholder, Wladimir Sidorenko for the latter’s title on July 15, 2006 at Hamburg, Germany. Incidentally, this was Poonsawat’s only fight outside Thailand.
Earlier in the year, Asis, who hails from General Santos City and now fighting out of the Olivetti Boxing Stable of Biňan, Laguna, also fought for another regional title in April of this year when he challenged the highly touted Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo for the latter’s ABCO featherweight title. In that fight, Asis was giving Piriyapinyo more than he could handle and even had the Thai in serious trouble several times but somehow lost in a not so uncommon hometown decision.
For his fight against Poonsawat, Asis told this writer that he will try to go for a knockout and will do so as soon as he sees an opportunity to end the fight early. The guy is in tip-top condition having been in training for three months already under the auspices of his trainer and manager, former RP super-bantamweight champion Dino Olivetti. Coupled with the rounds he sparred with RP No. 1 super-featherweight contender Aaron Melgarejo, who also served as one of Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partners for his fight with Jorge Solis, a much bigger fighter and obviously, a harder hitter than Poonsawat, he would have the “goods” to back up his claim. A week before the fight, he already met the super-bantam limit weighing in at 121 lbs. which he did without any difficulty.
We hope that Jack will be successful this career defining fight and bring home the regional crown when he returns to the country next week.
