MAKATI CITY ? Cognizant of the hardships and sacrifices concomitant to winning a world crown, Senator Emmanuel D. Pacquiao decided to give a P.5 million cash bonus to the newly-crowned International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Bantamweight champion Jerwin Ancajas.

The 24-year old Ancajas wrested the IBF Junior Bantamweight belt from Puerto Rican boxer McJoe Arroyo during their action-packed encounter last Saturday evening at the Philippine Navy Gymnasium in Pasig City.

Ancajas, the youngest in a brood of four, dropped Arroyo in the 8th round of their scheduled 12-round title bout.

The son of a banana plantation worker from Panabo, Davao Del Norte clearly dominated his opponent during the entire stretch earning for himself a unanimous victory after the clash.

The south paw ring gladiator earned a measly US$3,700 or roughly P173,000 for that Championship bout.

Minus the US$1,000 sanction fee imposed by the IBF, Ancajas received a meager US$2,700.

In an interview, Ancajas bared that he agreed to receive a lesser purse just to get a chance to fight for the world title.

?Ang importante sa akoa makuha ang korona ug makahatag kadungganan sa atong nasod. Gikinahanglan nako ang kwarta alang sa akoang pamilya apan wala ko naghuna-huna niana samtang nakigharong ibabaw sa ring. Dili kwarta ang naghatag kanako?g kadasig o inspirasyon (What?s important to me is to win the world crown and bring honor to our country. I need money for my family but I never thought about it while fighting atop the ring. Money, to me, is not the primary motivation),? Ancajas said.

Senator Pacquiao, who was apparently touched by Ancajas? humility and determination, said ?Kawawa naman. Ang liit ng premyo. He (Ancajas) deserves to get a bonus for bringing honor to our country.?

?He (Ancajas) had all the stuffs champions are made of ? humility, courage, determination and strong faith in God,? the fighting senator said.

The Senator from Mindanao directed one of his staffs to bring Ancajas to his office.

The new boxing world champion came to the Senate last Monday to receive recognition and accolade he deserves for his remarkable ring exploit.

He proceeded afterward to Senator Pacquiao?s office to thank and receive a cash bonus.

MP Promotions of Senator Pacquiao together with Joven Promotions staged the Arroyo-Ancajas title fight.
