BACOLOD CITY ? Following his successful title defense on Saturday, Philippines' longest reigning world champion and defending WBO Jr. Flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes (38-1-4, 22KOs) may face Mexican champion Juan Francisco Estrada (33-2 with 34 KOs) at 112 lbs. on September 24 instead of Moises ?Moi? Fuentes for a mandatory defense.
ALA Promotions? President and CEO Michael Aldeguer said that Nietes is scheduled for a mandatory title defense against Fuentes in September 24 at the Stub Hub Center in California but, also considering the Filipino champion fighting Estrada.
Estrada currently holds the WBA Super World Flyweight and WBO World Flyweight titles.
?Donnie wanted to have bigger fights. The thing is, he has a scheduled mandatory title defense against Fuentes. But, I spoke to the WBO and since Nietes is a super champion thus, he has the privilege to even make this super fight (against Estrada) happen on September 24 and if he wants to go back at 108 lbs., then he can fight Fuentes after 120 days. Though, it?s a done deal with Fuentes but, since Donnie is a super champion thus, he has the option,? Aldeguer added.
The Murcia-hailed Nietes successfully defended his belt on Saturday against Mexican challenger Raul ?Rayito? Garcia during the 'Pinoy Pride 36: A Legend in the Making' at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
Fighting before his hometown, Nietes gave his best shot not to disappoint the 4,000 crowd watching live at La Salle Coliseum. ?It?s been my dream and I?m thankful that I defended my belt. I?m so happy with this victory,? Nietes said.
Nietes dominated the former 2-time world champion Garcia sending him twice to the canvas in the match and eventually forced him to quit before the start of the 6th Round.
Garcia, through an interpreter, said that he really felt the heavy punches by Nietes in his body, and don?t want to push it further and take any chance. He added that the long travel from Mexico to the Philippines has likewise affected his Saturday?s performance.
The Mexican challenger also lauded the fans that came and watched the fight. ?The fans were really amazing. Thank you so much for the warm welcome,? Garcia said. (Watchmen Daily Journal)
