As they continue to train for their respective assignments at the 'World Cup' of boxing on August 11, Filipinos Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista and Gerry Penalosa continue to spar 'like mortal enemies' at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

A source said the two fighters were at each other's neck when they sparred yesterday, fighting as if something was at stake after their three-round session.

Bautista will challenge WBO superbantam champ Daniel Ponce De Leon, while Penalosa takes on WBO bantam boss Jhonny Gonzalez in the co-main event at the Arco Arena in Sacramento.

"Si Gerry ayaw mag padaig sa batang si Boom Boom.. si Boom2 naman gustong itumba si gerry," said the source, who added that the two butted heads four times during the three-round gym war

"Buti na lang di naputukan. Pero me pasa si gerry sa kilay dahil sa headbutt," the same source pointed out.

After Bautista, Penalosa, who now weighs 124 lbs, then sparred with the "Russian Dynamo" Andrei Krostin, who has been christened as such at the gym due to his talent and power.

"Eto yung sinasabi ko sa yo na magaling na Russian na halos nakikipag patayan pag ka spar nya ay Filipino. Naka 4 round sila ni Bautista," revealed another source.

After Penalosa, Bautista then sparred with Mexican slugger Alejandro Perez, who has been of tremendous help due to style similarity with Daniel Ponce De Leon.

"Dito natuto si boom boom kung paano lumaro nang tama. Kasi ang style nito si Perez ay parang si Ponce de leon. Kaya tinuturuan ni roach na tamang diskarte at tamang depensa sa pag sangga sa suntok ni perez," the source said, adding that Bautista is now down to 127.5 lbs.

Meanwhile, Diosdado 'Prince' Gabi sparred with another Mexican fighter as Bert Batawang forced his sparmate to quit.

"Napuruhan nya si chiquita, yung dating kalaban ni Donaire sa Chumash Casino. Putok at sabog ang dugo.. naka 5 round si bert," the source said.
