ILOILO CITY – Fight fans here are divided on where to tune in on Sunday, July 22, after two giant TV networks in the country—ABS-CBN and GMA-7—announced they are simultaneously showing two blockbusters international boxing shows in almost the same time slot.
ABS-CBN will broadcast on a “slightly delayed basis” the much-awaited lightheavyweight boxing match between Wrinky Wright and Bernard Hopkins dubbed “Coming to fight” in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas at 10 o’clock in the morning while GMA-7 will show the replay of the blockbuster IBF flyweight title showdown between Australian defending champion Vic “The Bull” Darchinyan and newest Fil-Am phenom Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in Connecticut three weeks ago also at 10 o’clock in the morning.
“I will watch the Hopkins-Wright fight because Wright is my idol,” said businessman Frank Atas, whose father owned a boxing gym in Negros.
“I haven’t seen the fight of Donaire where he demolished Darchinyan so I will watch the replay,” volunteered former boxing business manager Jun Intrepido.
“To solve my problem, I will use the technology: What else but the TV remote control. I will switch from one channel to another,” said Remy Cuambot, a former regional amateur boxing gold medalist here.
Both TV stations maintain high ratings among Ilonggos in this part of the country. It will be the first time that they will both televise international boxing fights at the same time.
