Philippine junior welterweight champion Mark Jason Melligen of the ALA Boxing Gym will defend his title for the first time today against Manila-based Jury Noda at the Island City Mall carpark in Tagbilaran City.
The 21-year-old southpaw Melligen had previously won the Philippine title with a seventh-round knockout over Christopher Saluday in Victorias City last April.
The Bacolod City-born Melligen had vied for the WBO Asia-Pacific junior welter title last February in South Korea, but was stopped in the seventh despite an excellent showing in the earlier rounds.
Melligen, however, is confident and has been working doubly hard at the ALA Gym to rectify his previous flaws to avoid the upset axe.
Today's event is promoted by SGG Sports Promotions in cooperation with Tagbilaran City Mayor Dan Neri Lim, a big boxing benefactor who has been invited by the legendary Oscar De la Hoya to watch the August 11 'World Cup' at special ringside in Sacramento.
In the chief support, Leon Maratas takes on Ronald Postrano in a ten-round encounter, while ALA Boy Joseph Omanz goes up against Arnel Layson over eight rounds.
Nic Banal trades leathers with Tiny Tyson over eight, while ex-RP flyweight champ Federico Catubay squares off with Roy Doliguez.
Former world-ranked fighter Noel Tunacao is also set to return to ring action against Carlo Magale over eight, while Ricky Sismundo battles Roland Econas in another 8-round tiff.
The curtain-raiser pits Gil Melligen against Romano Gelig.
