GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? World eight-division boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao publicly declared on Monday evening his intention to join the senatorial race in 2016 elections.
Pacquiao made the announcement during the convention of People?s Champ Movement (PCM), the local political party he himself had founded in 2010.
More than 1,000 party officials and members showed up during the convention held at the Family Country Hotel here.
?I would like to inform you that I?m running for senator this coming 2016 election. Whatever I did in my district in Sarangani, I would try to duplicate it in the whole country once I get elected,? Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao, who ran unopposed during his 2013 reelection bid, has one term left as Sarangani lawmaker.
PCM party chose Ruel D. Pacquiao, his youngest brother and incumbent federation president of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in Gensan, as Pacman?s successor.
Ruel transferred last year his residence to Sarangani. He was born in Tango village in Glan town.
The boxer-lawmaker claimed he has not yet decided as to which party he?s planning to enlist.
The Liberal Party has been wooing Pacquiao to run under its ticket.
Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice met with Pacquiao twice then, finally, LP presidential wannabe Mar Roxas also met with him sometime last month.
Pacquiao, however, turned down the offer.
Pacquiao entered into an alliance with the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of Vice President Jejomar Binay during the 2013 election.
The group of Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte has also been convincing Pacquiao to join their line-up, but Pacquiao did not commit then as Duterte had not yet declared his intention to run for president.
Duterte and Pacquiao, an adopted son of Davao City and a close pal of the tough-talking mayor, are partymates in the PDP-Laban.
When the duo met during the Kadayawan Festival sometime in August, Duterte pledge to serve as campaign manager of Pacquiao in Mindanao once the latter decides to run for Senate.
Just last week, former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri dropped by Pacquiao?s Forbes residence in Makati to convince him to run as independent.
?Let?s join forces and run as independent candidates. All the presidentiables are our good friends. I don?t want to hurt any of them. If we run as independent, it?s up to them if they are going to adopt us,? Zubiri was overheard telling Pacquiao.
Pacquiao, again, did not commit but said ?That?s a nice idea.? /By Aquiles Z. Zonio
