WAKEE SALUD ADVISES PACQUIAO TO LOOK LONG-TERM!

Popular boxing manager and promoter Rex 'Wakee' Salud, who arrived this morning from Los Angeles where he was at ringside for the Miguel Cotto-Zab Judah fight in New York, has advised his friend, boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao, to look at his career from a long-term perspective in terms of legacy and financial stability.

Salud said that Pacquiao should carefully weigh the options available to him, as these only come once in a lifetime and to a very select people like him.

"He should look at his options with objectivity, taking into account his legacy in boxing as well as financial stability for life," said Salud.

Two of the world's top promotional outfits--Oscar De la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions and Bob Arum's Top Rank--are at loggerheads as to who is the rightful promoter for the Filipino icon, although the latter had said he was siding with Top Rank.

A case had been filed by GBP against Top Rank for contractual interference at a Los Angeles court, and Pacquiao had just given his deposition to a battery of GBP lawyers. Sources say GBP is not leaving any stone unturned in its effort to assert its rights over Pacquiao, having signed the boxer first in September.

A court mediation is slated on Saturday for both parties to pave the way for a peaceful and amicable settlement, although Salud believes he won't be shocked if no agreement is reached out of court.

Golden Boy Promotions has promotional rights over an army of fighters who can give Pacquiao the boxing legacy as well as the purse he rightfully deserves in such marquee match-ups, while Top Rank only has the hitherto unknown but dangerous Humberto Soto in its fold.

Among the fighters promoted by GBP who can give Pacquiao the meaningful fights he deserves are WBC 130-lb king Juan Manuel Marquez, the popular Marco Antonio Barrera, Dominican Republic's Joan Guzman, and Argentinian Jorge Barrios.

Golden Boy Promotions also enjoys mutual cooperation with Asia's most influential promoter Akihiko Honda, who promotes the unbeaten WBA superfeatherweight boss Edwin Valero of Venezuela.
