CARSON, CA--Former world champion Marvin Sonsona endured fighting with an injured hand and scored a close majority decision win over journeyman Jonathan Arellano at the StubHub Center Saturday here.

Shaking off the rust of a year's inactivity, Sonsona was supposed to bulldoze his way against a short, stocky but game Mexican-American opponent Arellano who has lost five, won two and drawn one in his last eight fights.

Sonsona started off firing deadly combinations but Arellano responded with timely counters and even won several rounds in a closely-fought match that had judge Eddie Hernandez scoring it a draw, 95-95, after 10 rounds. Pat Russell and Sergio Caiz both saw it 96-94 for Sonsona, who improved to 19-1-1.

It was Sonsona's first fight after he beat Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. by a split decision victory exactly a year ago and his handlers noted the ring rust. Compounding his woes, the kid who is called "Marvelous" injured his left hand in the fourth round, shrugged off the pain and punched with the pain sparingly to repulse Arellano.

The 27-year-old Carson native Arellano was credited for his ring generalship and his aggressive style in keeping the fight close and exciting.

"We were hoping to have Marvin fight more this year with another fight in September but we might push it in October," said Sammy Gello-ani, Sonsona's manager. "We will have to get a doctor's evaluation, hoping the injury is not serious enough."

After a brief rest, Team Sonsona hopes to get the Filipino back in training to get him into championship form at the heavier featherweight division. Sonsona became the WBO super-flyweight champion at age 18 in 2009 but lost the title after two fights only.

"We need to have Marvin not lose focus. After this fight, he will continue to stay in Las Vegas where he will train with Al Haymon's stable of fighters," said Gello-ani.
