Hot Filipino prospect Donnie Nietes of the ALA Boxing Gym, who holds the WBO Asia-Pacific minimumweight title and ranked no. 2 by the sanctioning body, is slowly but surely inching his way to a possible crack at a world title.
According to his Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani, the Bacolod City-raised Nietes will most likely end up fighting for the WBO 105-lb crown especially if current title-holder Ivan Calderon makes true his recent pronouncements that he would move up and challenge WBO junior fly champ Hugo Cazares.
"I might include Nietes in the World Cup," stated Gello-ani, referring to the huge event being lined up for late August or early September in Cebu or Manila.
According to boxing website Boxrec.com, Ivan Calderon is already penciled to challenge Cazares on August 25 for the 108-lb title at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
As such, the no. 2 Nietes will definitely be in a position to vie for the vacant title, possibly against no. 3 Juan Palacios of Nicaragua.
Top contender Oleydong Sithchanerchai may not be available to fight Nietes, as he holds a belt which belongs to a rival boxing organization.
