LOS ANGELES, Cal. -- Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao Wednesday expressed appreciation to recent tormentor Floyd Mayweather Jr. for reportedly announcing his desire to fight the former World Boxing Organization welterweight belt-owner again.
"Maraming salamat kay Floyd for his statement expressing desire to fight me again," the 36 year-old Pacquiao told this writer upon arriving at his Plymouth Blvd. residence here following surgery on his injured right shoulder.
"Most importantly though, I would also want to express my gratitude to him for the kind words he said of the Philippines and the Filipinos during the post-fight press conference," the eight-division titleholder remarked.
"I was also told that Floyd spoke, too, of me very kindly and I would like to thank him for his gesture," the father of five with Sarangani Vice Gov. Jinkee said.
He said, it was the first time that he heard Mayweather's good words, especially about him and God.
"Kaya happy na rin ako, kasi I consider that already a victory," the Sarangani Congressman uttered.
But while it took nearly six years for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to materialize, it might take a shorter time for the second serving to take place, one year, perhaps.
This is because, according to Money May's e-mail message to Stephen Smith of ESPN, he is willing to face Pacquiao anew as soon as the latter is pronounced to have recovered fully from the shoulder injury he suffered while in training for their super-fight held last May 2 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.
Mayweather emerged triumphant via a unanimous decision in that confrontation that unified the welterweight division.
Pacquiao underwent a rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder Wednesday and although Dr. Neal El Attrache of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic declared the operation a success, it may take the Pacman 6 to 12 months before he can box again.
Pacquiao said Dr. El Attache allowed him to fly back home where Dra. Gina Bagsik will attend to him during rehabilitation period at the Cardinal Santos Hospital in San Juan City. Dr. El Attrache will also be flying to Manila when needed.
He and his family fly home on Sunday.
Wife Jinkee, who accompanied her husband to the clinic along with businessman-friend Abbas Ahmadi and Pacquiao's business consultant Mike Koncz, said the surgery lasted for one and a-half-hours.
"We were both nervous din first time niya to go under the knife," she said while spoon-feeding her husband who could not eat with his right hand, which was in a brace. "Pero nang maisip ko na eksperto pala naman ang doktor, na-relaxed na ako," Jinkee added.
Jinkee was referring to Dr. El Attrache, whose clientele include big-time athletes like the Lakers' Kobe Bryant.
"Oo nga, it's my first time na ma-operahan, kaya ni-nerbyos din," Pacquiao butted in. "When I was being applied with anesthesia, I didn't know kung magigising pa ako," Pacquiao recalled. "I was thinking kasi yung ibang tao natutulog lang hindi na nagigising, eh ako inooperahan, ginagamitin ng iba't-ibang instrument."
While still awake and being put to sleep, Pacquiao said he asked clinic attendants to play worship music. "That helped me feel relaxed," he relayed.
