ALA Boys Shine In Quezon City

Three boxers from the famed ALA Gym in Cebu displayed their wares in Barangay Toro, Quezon City last night amidst the presence of emerging boxing stars Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista and AJ “Bazooka” Banal.
In the main event of the evening, ALA boy Along Denoy scored a 4th round TKO win against veteran Roberto Rubillar in a fight held at the 112-pound limit. After gaining little headway in the earlier rounds on the defensively-minded Rubillar, Denoy finally dropped Rubillar when he nailed the latter with a perfect semi-uppercut to the midsection midway in the 4th. Rubillar managed to beat the count but simply shook his head when asked by Referee Warren Jaro if he was fit to continue prompting the referee to stop the fight.
In another bout, another rising talent in Milan Melindo displayed fine boxing technique to outbox Wendell Cajoles over ten rounds and won via a unanimous decision by the scores of 100-91, 99-91, and 99-91. Melindo used a variety of punches in scoring punishing shots on Cajoles although the latter managed to stay on his feet and finished the round. Melindo also showed superb defense effectively blocking many of Cajoles’ punches with his gloves while evading the others with excellent footwork and good head movement.
The most interesting fight of the evening belongs however to the super-bantamweight bout between Ruben Santillanosa of Cebu and Mervin Batolina from Valenzuela City. Santillanosa, who fights mostly in Australia and fought for the Australian Super-Featherweight Title last year, appeared to have benefited from his experience in fighting Australian rising stars as he was showing his skills to outbox and out-punch the shorter Batolina with his speed and a stiff jab. After a rather uneventful first round, Santillanosa caught Batolina with a hook to the head to stagger the latter and prompting him to run for cover. Santillanosa continued to chase the wobbly Batolina while scoring some more big shots to the head. Another hook to the head dropped Batolina but he rose up shortly with a rather unsteady disposition. Nonetheless, the sound of the bell saved him in this round. The game Batolina came back strong in the third round and engaged Santillanosa in a virtual slugfests amidst the roaring crowd and both boxers appeared to have been staggered. Both fighters were still waxing hot in subsequent rounds until Batolina suddenly dropped Santillanosa to the canvas midway in the sixth with a left hook to the jaw further escalating the excitement of the crowd. Santillanosa came back strong after the knockdown and appeared to have regained control of the fight. Both fighters continued to trade until the end of the bout in the eight round although the rounds appear to have been in favor Santillanosa. In the end, the fight was declared a majority draw.
ALA upstart Joseph Omanz and Jun Piasidad in the super-bantamweight division were fighting on even terms until Piasidad finally succumbed to Omanz’ pounding of his body. Piasidad was able to block most of Omanz’ wild hooks and crosses and scoring some crisp counters in the process but a left hook in the 4th round sent him sprawling to the canvas, obviously in great pain. He did manage to get up upon the prompting of his corner but went down the second time after Omanz pummeled him again with vicious hooks to the body. This time Piasidad could no longer continue and Omanz was awarded a TKO win in 1:06 of the 4th round improving his professional record to 6-0.
The curtain raiser was a junior feather bout between Ronnie Pelonia and Joel Rafols which ended in a majority draw after Pelonia did better in the first two rounds and Rafols dominating the next two.
