GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? World eight-division boxing champion and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao led on Thursday the groundbreaking ceremony of his P295 million ($US6.7 million) house of worship in a sprawling five-hectare prime lot here.

Pacquiao, a born again Christian, said this is his own way of thanking God for all the blessing he has received in life.

?I owe everything to God. I have to give it back to Him. The amount is nothing compared to what God has done to my life,? Pacquiao said.

Present during the groundbreaking rites were Sarangani Vice Gov. Jinkee Pacquiao, Gov. Steve Chiongbian-Solon, former Maitum town mayor Lucille Perrett, project manager Rey Cortes and several pastors.

Based on the plan, two hectares of the total lot area will be devoted for the church?s two-storey building and an annex.

The two-story building will serve as the main worship area while the annex building will house the Bible school, Bible study room, a pastor?s lounge and commercial offices.

Pacquiao was expecting that the project would be completed within an 18-month period.

Bautista J. Buan, senior pastor and BOD vice president, revealed that Pacquiao has been dreaming to build a church of his own.

Now that dream has finally become a reality.

Pacquiao has been vocal and daring in proclaiming and spreading the Word of God.

The church is named ?The Word for Everyone.?

?The Word of God strengthens my faith and protects me from evil. That?s why I always read the Bible,? Pacquiao said.

Aside from carving his own niche in the fields of boxing and politics, the boxer-lawmaker wants to bequeath something more important and special to his children and next generation.

?I want to leave behind a legacy of faith and a House of God. This is more self-fulfilling than my achievements in boxing and politics,? the Filipino boxing superstar said.
