SHANGHAI--The head of the Professional Boxing Commission of China, executive director Leon Panoncillo, has once again stressed the importance of safety for fighters during its rules meeting for fighters taking part in a big event today here at the Mercedes Benz Arena promoted by Top Rank and SECA.
Panoncillo, who formed the PBC to oversee the growing interest of China and other countries for professional boxing, pointed out the importance of proper hand-wrapping and avoiding possible breach of rules that trainers and seconds might commit during fights.
"I don't want anyone dying on me. We need to make sure the wrapping of the hands, the taping, is done properly and should be within the rules," Panoncillo stressed before allowing his chief locker room inspector Romar Kristoffer Embodo to demonstrate proper wrapping techniques.
Today's card, which the PBC will run and supervise, will feature a double regional championship featuring WBO and IBF titles, as well as promising fighters from China against foreign fighters.
Ik Yang Lianhui faces Fahsai Sakkreeerin for IBF light welterweight championship, while Ma Yiming takes on Indonesian Tommy Seran for the WBO title.
China has recently embraced professional boxing with no less than two-time Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming fighting exclusively in Macau at the Venetian Hotel's Cotai Arena.
Next year, China organizers plan to hold even more events than this year under the PBC with Macau and Shanghai as leading venues, as well as other China cities.
