ROACH PREDICTS FIRST ROUND KO WIN FOR PACQUIAO

GENERAL SANTOS CITY ? ?First round!?
Chief trainer Freddie Roach, pointing his forefinger up, exclaimed Saturday afternoon by way of indicating the round World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will stop challenger Chris Algieri when the duo meet this coming Sunday at the Cotai Arena at The Venetian in Macau.
?Manny only needs one round to keep his crown,? the Hall of Fame trainer added as he approached this writer following a three-round skirmish with sparring partner Stan Martyniouk, whom his eight-division world champion student sent to the canvas for the second time in the 40 rounds they exchanged blows since coming here seven weeks ago to help the 147-pound titlist prepare for his Macau bout.
The first time the Pacman fell Martyniouk in sparring was two weeks ago. At one time, Pacquiao also bloodied Martyniouk face.
A left straight to the haw caught the outbalanced the 5-foot-10 Martyniouk to the jaw, dropping him to his knees midway through the second round that officially brought down the curtains of the eight-week Pacman Wild Card training camp here.
?Manny?s too fast, you wouldn?t know where he?s coming from and where his punches come from,? Martyniouk coluld only murmur after the session his face reddened from the punishment he received.
Jose Ramirez, the no. 1 junior welterweight contender, was also in the same position Matryniouk was in in a separate three-round sparring earlier in the day although he remained standing till the session?s end.
?Happy, I?m very happy with the way the camp went the past two months,? Roach said noting how he, conditioning coach Justin Fortune and assistants trainers Buboy Fernandez, Nonoy Neri and Roger ?Haplas? Fernandez succeeded in whipping the ?Fighter of the Decade? into the competitive form, he added, he hadn?t seen the past five years.
?This is the one of the best camp we?ve held,? he added. ?Better than, say, Manny?s previous eight fights or so.
?Credit should go to Manny, too, for his work ethics, sincerity and determination in following the training regimen we crafted for him,? the 54-year-old Bostonian guru said.
?That he endured the rigor and toughness of what he went through meant he?s back to the days when he was knocking out everybody that crossed his path, including opponents much, bigger than him,? Roach recalled.
Roach said that although the camp formally ended Saturday, he is scheduling a four-round sparring against Viktor Postol early afternoon Monday on the behest of Pacquiao himself. Monday is the day Pacquiao and his team, including some 200 supporters, family members, friends and even members of his Team Kia in the PBA, fly via two chartered planes to the Chinese gambling city where he is supposed to wrap up his readiness program.
?Manny asked for some more action Monday before we leave for Macau and I obliged because that?s a sign that he is really enjoying the camp. He?s happy, we in the training staff acknowledge that,? he quipped.
?Yeah, Manny?s seems very happy with what he?s been doing in the camp,? Fortune, for his part, said by way of agreeing to what Roach said. ?I know when he?s happy when the sparing is supposed to go 10 rounds, he would ask for two more. When doing the mitts is for 12 rounds, he would ask that it be extended to 15. That?s the way Manny is all throughout the camp.?
?You know when a man is happy, he?ll be 100 percent and Manny will be 100 percent when he climbs that ring Sunday in Macau,? the Australian cancer-surviving conditioning coach assessed. ?I can only pity Chris.?
