MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA -- The first TV fight on Showtime was a title fight. Guadalajara?s Miguel Vasquez (34-3-0, 13KO) the IBF lightweight champion laid his crown against Cleveland, Ohio?s Mickey Bey (20-1-1, 10 KO). He is the same Vasquez that derailed the plans of Filipino Mercito Gesta when they fought On the undercard of Pacquiao-Bradley I for the IBF title.
The Vasquez-Bey fight signaled the arrival of the fight fans who until the fight started were nowhere to be seen. But to their disappointment, the fight was boring. Many took the lack of excitement as the time to go to the beer line. Others who don?t drink were seen taking selfies and perhaps sending tweets and instagrams. Many others were just booing.
Some photographers in the meantime were seen scanning the crowd to see who is around. One found was Richard Schaefer the ex CEO of Golden Boy who we later heard was a personal guest of Mayweather.
One photographer 6 seats away from me asked loudly - ?Hey Doc, who is winning?? The guy next to me who heard it answered ? ?Is there a fight??
That is how boring is the fight!
In the end, the fight ended with a split decision victory for Mickey Bey. Scores were 115-113, 113-115 and 119-109.
?Huh?? was the reaction from the crowd in front of us.
