SHANGHAI ? Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri dropped by Shanghai yesterday to promote their WBO welterweight championship fight in November at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
Pacquiao (56-5-2,38KO?s), the defending champion, continues to enjoy world wide popularity. The two term congressman and his challenger, the undefeated WBO junior welterweight champ Algieri (20-0,8KO?s), attracted a legion of Chinese and foreign journalists during their press conference held at the Sheraton.
Algieri is being touted as a guy who wins when people expect him to lose. That is a good selling point. But we all know Manny and there is a huge disparity as far as their resumes are concerned.
But stranger things have happened in boxing. Remember Buster Douglas vs Mike Tyson? Tokyo is not that far away.
Pacquiao has the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) in his mind. But Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has assured the media that his prized boxer will take a leave of absence from the KIA basketball team once training camp starts.
PETALCORIN WINS WBA TITLE IN SHANGHAI
With Pacquiao watching at ringside, Randy ?Razor? Petalcorin emerged victorious in the biggest fight of his career.
Petalcorin?s offense was calculated. He stuck to his game plan and eventually stopped Walter Tello of Panama in the seventh round.
The 22 year old Petalcorin (22-1-1,17KO?s) turned pro in 2009 and fought under the radar in Mindanao. Four years ago, he suffered his only loss at the hands of another fine Filipino prospect, Marlon Tapales. That fight happened on the undercard of Brian Viloria?s IBF title loss to Carlos Tamara in Pasay City.
But Petalcorin slowly worked his way back, winning WBC Asia and PABA regional belts along the way. He fought twice in Australia before his big moment inside the Mercedes Benz Arena in Shanghai. Jim Claude Manangquil, Peter Maniatis and the rest of their team celebrated inside the ring when referee Raul Caiz,Sr signaled the end of the bout.
With the interim WBA world light flyweight belt in his hands, things are looking up for Petalcorin.
