PhilBoxing.com has learned that Darlene Antonino-Custodio's lawyer, Sixto Brillantes, will file a petition at the Commission on Elections office tomorrow to ask the Comelec to stop the showing on television and the airing on radio in the Philippines of the Pacquiao-Solis fight as the huge national exposure of the event will give undue political advantage to Pacquiao.
Antonino-Custodio, the incumbent House representative in the first disctrict of South Cotabato, is being challenged by Manny Pacquiao in the coming May 14 elections.
The Comelec has an electoral rule that limits the media exposure of each candidate during the campaign period. Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing superstar who opted to throw his hat in the Philippine political arena, will fight the undefeated Mexican Jorge Solis at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on April 14, well within the campaign period.
Earlier interviews on Comelec Chairman Ben Abalos had Abalos saying that the airing of the Pacquiao fight might be permitted as this can be considered as a news event. The filing of the petition by Custodio will put to test this particular Comelec electoral rule.
The filing of the case also puts in jeopardy Solar Sports' and GMA Network's upcoming coverage of the fight as it was earlier reported that two Philippine media giants had invested huge sums of money for the coverage of this event.
