CEBU CITY ? The 27th edition of the very successful PINOY PRIDE series had its official press launching today at the Rajah Park Hotel. ALA boxers Genesis ?Azukal? Servania, ?King? Arthur Villanueva and Rey ?BoomBoom? Bautista will see action at the Dubai World Trade Center on September 5. This will be the first PINOY PRIDE event held outside the Philippines.
The unbeaten Servania (24-0,10KO's) will put his WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight title on the line against Jose ?Matador? Cabrera (22-4-2,10KO's) of Mexico. Cabrera once fought for a world title and has held the NABF and Mexican titles.
?He has a defensive style,? Servania said, ?It will be a questions of adjustments inside the ring. I will try to destroy his style and game plan.?
Servania has suffered cuts in his recent fights but he said this will not be a problem. ?They were due to headbutts. I have learned to fight with cuts.?
Villanueva, another unbeaten world ranked boxer, will be pitted against Henry ?El Crespo? Maldonado (19-3,14KO's) of Nicaragua for the IBF International jr. bantamweight title.
Villanueva (25-0,14KO's) last saw action in March, winning a hard fought battle against Fernando Aguilar of Mexico by unanimous decision at the Solaire Resort and Casino.
"I learned from my mistakes in that fight,? Villanueva said. ?He (Maldonado) is not an easy opponent, He knocked out Aguilar in his last fight. I will try to give a better performance.?
Maldonado has held WBA regional and Nicagaruan titles.
Bautista (35-3,25KO's), who maintains his popularity with fight fans, will face Mexican Juan Jose ?Piquet? Martinez (19-1,15KO's) in a ten round non-title superfeatherweight bout. Last May, BoomBoom got a hard fought unanimous victory against Sergio Villanueva at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Bautista said he has adjusted to fighting at 130 lbs. ?Featherwieghts are faster, the boxers hit harder when I moved up in weight but I can take their punches.?
Martinez won the vacant WBC Mundo Hispano super featherweight title last March by unanimous decision against Carlos Jimenez.
ALA Promotions Pres and CEO Michael Aldeguer talked about the long road to building an audience and promoting big fights here in the Philippines. He talked about his vision of what Philippine boxing should be. Dubai has registered high TV ratings for the PINOY PRIDE series and more than 3000 fans are expected to attend the event. The fights will be shown here in the Philippines on ABS-CBN.
The last PINOY PRIDE event here in Cebu, FISTS OF THE FUTURE, had a 16.6 percent national TV rating, with the main event, Jason Pagara vs Mario Meraz peaking at 19 percent.
The boxers for PINOY PRIDE 27: DUEL IN DUBAI will also have scheduled public workouts here in Cebu this August.
