SONSONA GETS ENDORSEMENT DEAL

NEW YORK ? As a sign of things to come, Filipino knockout artist Marvin Sonsona got his first endorsement in a one-off deal with Mitsubishi Motors where the former world champion had to carry the carmaker logo during the weighin and during his fight with former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr this Saturday at the Madison Square Garden.

?This is only the beginning,? Sonsona's Filipino promoter Samson Gello-ani told Philboxing. ?If he keeps on winning, bigger endorsements and bigger opportunities will surely follow,? Gello-ani said.

Being singled-out for endorsement means Sonsona has caught the eye of sponsors or of at least one sponsor. ?We choose Sonsona because he is an exciting fighter and has the potential to make it big,? Mitsubishi's agent Miguel Salazar told Philboxing. ?We could have approached Vazquez or the other fighters, but Marvin is exciting and if he wins impressively we will continue to support him in the future,? Salazar said.

Sonsona (18-1-1, 15KO) is on a comeback trail after his loss to Vazquez in 2010 and an uneventful three years that followed. Sonsona announced his serious comeback with an eye-catching one-punch knockout win over highly rated Akifumi Shimoda of Japan last February in Macau. Saturday, Sonsona will face his tormentor in a rematch for the vacant NABF featherweight title.
