NEW YORK ? Filipino featherweight contender and former flyweight world champion Marvin Sonsona arrived at the Big Apple from San Francisco aboard Delta Air just past midnight Wednesday ahead of his rematch with former Puerto Rican world title holder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr this Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) on the undercard of the Cotto-Martinez megafight at the Madison Square Garden.
Sonsona was accompanied by his team headed by Philippine promoter Sammy Gello-ani, his manager Dr Rajan Yraola and wife Christine, trainer Jun Agrabio and this writer. Team Sonsona stayed for ten days in Oakland, CA at Nonito Donaire Sr's gym to cap a six-weeks training that started in Yraola's Gym in Quezon City in preparation for what has become one of the most important fights in Sonsona's career.
Sonsona will join a media workout Thursday afternoon with fellow undercard fighters Andy Lee, John Jackson and Javier Maciel and on Friday, he will face the scales for the final hurdle before Saturday's big fight. Sonsona, who had a sandwich and garden salad for lunch while waiting his flight at the San Francisco Internationa Airport, was four pounds over the weight limit of 126 pounds when he left Oakland and according to his trainer Jun Agrabio, they are right on target for Friday's weighin.
Members of the team are in high spirits ahead of Saturday's fight and confident Sonsona will avenge his loss against Vazquez, the only blemish of Sonsona's young career.
